This week we began our Dictée program. On Mondays we will write a pre-test (‘Mon point de départ’). Students who get all of the words correct on the pre-test will practice a sentence throughout the week instead of studying the words. On Fridays we will write our dictée. All students will write the words and those who received all words correct on the pre-test will also write the sentence. Other students may choose to practice the sentence as well as the words at home throughout the week and may write the sentence on Friday if they choose to (and if they have practiced it). On Mondays students will bring home the Dicteee the word list and weekly sentence in the Dictée section of their agenda binder. They will also bring home a 'feuille d'étude' (study sheet). Students can use this tool to work on mastering a few words each evening as well as review the previous nights words. This helps to teach the students effective study habits as well as establishing a regular homework / homestudy routine. In class, I will show the students how to use the 'feuille d'étude'. I will also send home an English version the first week so that you can help your child become familiar with it. Please keep the study sheet in the agenda binder, this will allow me to monitor your child's progress throughout the week. I will collect the study sheets at the end of the week.
In class we will focus on each student's individual progress from Monday's "point de départ" to Friday's Dictée. As with everything we do in class, our goal is not a score or a mark, our goal is learning:-) If there are words they didn't get right on the Dictée, we know these are words for them to continue to practice at home and during our 'word work' centres in class.
The words that we will be studying for our Dictée program are sight words that are used very frequently when reading and writing. Once we have studied a set of words and the students have done their Dictée, the words will be posted on our 'Word Wall'. At this point, the expectation in class will be that students spell these words correctly in all their written work. If any of these words are not spelled correctly in their classwork, the student will be asked to look for the word on our 'Word Wall' and make the correction.
