Welcome to Division 18!
We are very excited to begin the new school year! We have a wonderful group of students and I look forward to an amazing year full of learning and FUN!
Home Reading
We have started our home reading program. The students have their record pages in their binders and they have each chosen 2 books from our home reading library. The children may exchange their home reading books as often as they like. If they would like to keep the same books for a couple of nights they are more than welcome to do so. Re-reading familiar books can help students increase fluency and confidence in their reading.
Wet weather
The students at James Kennedy go outside for recess and lunch, rain or shine. It is important that the students get outside and play everyday! The students will VERY rarely be kept inside due to the weather. Please ensure that your child has weather-appropriate clothing and footwear so they can enjoy their time outside. It would also be very helpful if you could send a change of clothes for those days when the students come back from recess wet or muddy. Please put the clothes in a bag clearly labeled with your child’s name. Thank you.
Allergies
As you are probably aware, James Kennedy is 'nut-safe'. There are students in the school and our classroom with serious nut allergies. We ask that you not send products to school containing nuts of any kind, including peanuts and tree nuts. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.
Healthy snacks
During snack time we have talked about healthy choices to fuel our bodies until lunch. It can be tempting for the children to reach for a yummy after lunch treat when they open their lunch kits at snack time. At home each morning you can talk to your child about what is in his or her lunch. Together you can decide which items would make a healthy snack to set them up for success for the rest of the morning and which items should be saved for after lunch when all the other food is eaten.
Inside shoes
Please send a pair of inside runners that your child will keep in their cubby. We will be asking the children to change shoes every time they go in & out. This will keep our class a bit cleaner and help maintain our gym floor. Please ensure your child can change into these shoes independently and quickly.
Water Bottle
Learning is thirsty work! Please send a water bottle with your child each day. I suggest something small that stands well and that closes completely. The pull top kind and spouted ones work best. These can be kept in their cubby with out risk of spillage.
I am looking forward to a year full of learning with this group of amazing little people!
